Should You Hire a Photographer AND a Videographer?

This is one of the most common questions I get as a wedding and elopement photographer. Is it worth the extra cost to hire a videographer even if you already have a wedding photographer? In short, my answer is yes. There are things that that video can capture that photos can't, just like there are things that photos can capture that video can't.

Relive Your Day in Real Time

The coolest thing about videography is you can actually relive certain moments in real time. You can re-listen to your vows from each other at any time, which is far different from rereading them. Depending on the package you get from your videographer, you can often get the full ceremony video, your full vows, and even your full toasts, in addition to the fun highlight reel.

Get Double the Souvenirs from Your Once-in-a-Lifetime Day

This day that you’ve spent months (if not years) planning is happening once. Do you know what you’ll have in 10, 20, 50 years to remember it? The visuals. Unlike the cake that you’ll never taste again or the dress you’ll have no reason to wear again, your photos and videos will stand the test of time. Why not spoil yourself with double the content?

Other Tips for Hiring a Videographer

Just like you would have two photographers working day-of, I also recommend doing that with video! By having a team of two, you get more stuff that you weren't living through in the moment. For example, if your main photographer is working on your family photos, the second photographer can be shooting the candids of your cocktail hour. The same thing goes for your videography team. If one videographer is filming your favorite people giving toasts, then the other person can film your parents reactions to the words being said about you.

It’s also really important to hire vendors that approach these days in the same manner. If you hire vendors that are used to working together, they’ll know exactly how to help the other to ultimately get the best results for you, the couple. For me, for example, I have a few videographer vendors across the country that I am obsessed with working with, that I will recommend 10 out of 10 times. However, there are also others who I just don't vibe with and we don't shoot the same way, so I won't recommend them. I photograph very journalistically and not-posed, so I don’t work well with videographers who require a lot of posing or re-enactment of certain events.

When it comes to deciding on what you should spend that extra chunk of change on, you ultimately have two options. You can spend it on something that’s fleeting, like your cake or catering, or you can spend it on something that is permanent and going to last forever. I'm biased, but why wouldn't you spend it on the thing that's going to last forever?
