Fun and Unique Wedding Reception Ideas
If I had to choose one word to describe this Isle of Skye elopement portrait session, it would be “breathtaking.” Or maybe “romantic.” Or “totally amazing and fun and I can’t wait to do it again!” Okay, maybe I can’t choose one word at all. But thinking about how much fun I had with Zoe and Farquhar during their intimate destination elopement session got me thinking about how to bring that level of fun to a bigger affair like a wedding.
While you can find me getting down on the dance floor, that isn’t everyone’s favorite MO for having a good time. And with lots of guests, it can be tough to figure out how to make sure everyone gets to join in on the beautiful and fun-filled memories you’re building. Lucky for you, I have seen some really unique and creative wedding reception ideas and activities over the years. Here are my favorite unique ways to get your guests on their feet and involved in an unforgettable party:
Games—think giant Jenga, a board game table, wedding bingo (this one’s fun during cocktail hour), casino or arcade games (you can rent these!), and even a game of flag football if you’re crazy.
Rent a bouncy house (Sounds crazy, but I’ve heard lots of positive feedback about this one!)
Everyone’s favorite alcohol-fueled pastime: Karaoke!
If you’re having a kid-free wedding, drinking games (with safe ways to get home!!) can be so fun.
Interactive food and drink stations like an ice cream bar, cocktail and cocktail station, or a cotton candy artist.
A few honorable mentions from my favorite unique wedding shenanigans include a 2025 wedding where the groom’s dad was an Elvis impersonator and did a set, and they changed outfits. This was a BLAST and everyone there was so impressed. I also loved when an awesome elopement couple brought in a tattoo artist and got matching tattoos to commemorate the day. Not gonna lie, I wanted to jump in and get one, too!
