How to Write a Good Proposal Speech | Red Rock Canyon Proposal

Okay, you’ve planned out every last detail of your proposal. You have the date, you have the location, you have a sneaky plan to keep your partner completely not suspicious—but what on earth are you going to say? So many partners say they pulled out the ring and then completely blacked out, just hoping they said everything their partner wanted to hear. To avoid that frightening experience, read my tips for writing a proposal speech that will blow your partner away!

  • Say what your partner means to you: what you love about them, what you love about yourself because of them, and how you picture the future you want with them.

  • Make it personal and authentic! Embrace your emotions as you write and as you speak. Consider adding anecdotes or memories that are special or specific to your relationship; a good laugh or a teary smile are always a great sign.

  • Practice, practice, practice until you know it well enough that you won’t be worried about forgetting words, stumbling, or repeating yourself. Run it by a few people throughout your writing process, especially those close to your partner who will know them as well as you do.

  • Most importantly: Ask the question! Consider different phrasings that match your relationship, like the classic “Will you marry me?” or a snazzy “May I have the honor of being your husband/wife/partner?”

Ultimately, keep it short and sweet in the literal sense. Avoid rambling on and on until you lose track of what you’re saying (and lose feeling in your knee) by sticking to these key points that focus on your love for your partner and the life you lead together. With these tips in mind, you are sure to get a resounding YES!
