The style of each photographer generally falls into one of a few broad categories. Traditional photography focuses on detailed direction and posing, bright vs. edgy photography focuses on mood and atmosphere, and documentary style is very much storytelling using photos. As an example, if you value photos that draw you back in to the moment and wash you in the emotions of the day, my documentary style puts an emphasis on candid, in-between moments where your love tends to shine the brightest. Once you decide what style of photography fits your vision, you can dial in on one whose specific look you vibe with.

Personality, Values, and Experience

Trusting a stranger to capture highly intimate and wildly important pictures (often for a lot of money) is a big ask. It’s so, so important that you get along with that person! Look for somebody who values the unique story of your love and will do justice to the vision you have in your head. Before you reach out to a photographer, do lots of research. Read testimonials, comb their portfolio, and look carefully at their experience with couples similar to you. Once you’re ready to reach out, an in-depth call or video conference before your session is vital to see if your personalities mesh and values align.
