Top Travel Tips For an Icelandic Portrait Session| Travel Elopement Photographer
If I had to choose one destination I’ve visited that is the most magical, I would without a doubt choose Iceland. The unique weather, vibrant plant life, luxurious hot springs, and picturesque lagoons—it all combines into the most incredible, immersive experience you can imagine. When Tinna and Manuel contacted me for an outdoor couple’s portrait session surrounded by all of Iceland’s breathtaking nature, you can bet I jumped on a plane in my warmest sweater and fuzziest socks!
Iceland’s unique weather and landscape mean some unique travel requirements. Here’s my best advice, especially if you’re planning a destination portrait session with me:
Weather conditions change fast—Research weather conditions beforehand. Always include warm layers and outerwear that will protect you from wet, windy weather.
Bring what you need to feel rested on the road. In the summer months, it’s a good idea to invest in a good eye mask since daylight hours last a long time.
While most locals are familiar with American tourists, I’ve seen many people recommend avoiding small talk and excessive friendliness which can seem inauthentic or forced. Ask for advice, be kind, and enjoy the beauty of your surroundings first and foremost.
Bring a reusable water bottle–the tap water is some of the best in the world and it’s frowned upon by locals to buy single-use plastic bottles.
Be extra mindful of protecting the fragile flora and fauna. Wherever we end up taking pictures, we’ll be sure to have express permission and avoid leaving any kind of imprint on our surroundings. If you take your own photos as you explore, do not stop on the side of the road!
When in doubt, ask the locals! They always know the best spots and how to make the most of your trip. Just remember to respect the people you meet and places you explore.
My favorite part of Tinna and Manuel’s session? Their traditional Icelandic sweaters! They were beautiful, cozy, and paid homage to Tinna’s Icelandic heritage. Experiencing this beautiful place through the eyes of a native made me feel so lucky, unleashing a new creative respect for the art that inherently exists in nature. If there’s a place that holds deep roots in your heritage, I would be so honored to document its significance in you and your partner’s lives! Let’s go!
